Tiles come in a variety of shapes and colors, and can be combined with other tiles to create distinctive patterns or borders. You should select tiles appropriate for the location. Generally, larger tiles are used for floors, medium tiles for countertops, and smaller tiles for walls. Of course, there are exceptions. For example, if a floor is actually a raised platform, smaller tiles may be more appropriate to avoid tile cracking, which can occur on a floor where movement in the substructure is possible. Most tiles are divided into three basic categories: wall, floor, and mosiac tiles. The variety of basic shaped tiles are considered field tiles, while specialty tiles are usually used for trim and to create a finished edge. You should try to stay with a single tile manufacturer since using tiles from different manufacturers could result in tiles that vary in thickness by an 1/8 inch, more or less. |
